The Indiana Compassion Map allows users to explore the richness and diversity of over 11,000 of the state’s community healing organizations, learning more about what they do and where they are located.
Indiana’s nonprofit sector is robust and large. The Indiana Compassion Map allows users to explore the richness and diversity of over 11,000 of the state’s community healing organizations, learning more about what they do and where they are located. The Compassion Map was constructed by researchers at the Sagamore Institute for Policy Research, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization headquartered in America’s Heartland. According to Independent Sector, the leading national research association on the nonprofit sector in America, Indiana boasts some 32,993 nonprofit organizations. Indiana’s nonprofit sector employs over 230,200 people and has $45.7 billion in annual revenues. The Indiana Compassion Map includes information on 11,213 of organizations registered as nonprofits. Not all nonprofits are engaged in social service/community development type activities, which are the focus of the Compassion Map.
To select organizations for inclusion in the Map, researchers at the Sagamore Institute relied on the groups’ self-classifications in the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE Codes). The NTEE is the most widely accepted classification system of nonprofit organizations, classifying groups according to the programs and services they provide. We focused on organizations categorized under 20 of the 26 minor groupings in the NTEE. For the list of NTEE Codes used by Sagamore researchers to construct the Indiana Compassion Map, click here. We used the Guidestar database of nonprofit organizations to collect information on the Ohio nonprofits that were classified under the NTEE Codes we had selected for inclusion. (Note: organizations with budgets below $25,000 were excluded, as were organizations whose services were primarily conducted outside of Indiana and organizations for which inadequate information was available on Guidestar or other online sources.) It is important for users to verify the hours of operation and the location of the nonprofit. Please complete this form to be added to the map or to make adjustment to your listing. All adjustments and additions will be verified by Sagamore staff.
